Abstract
This study was designed to identify the relationship between perceived social support and burden of psychiatric patients¢¥ family caregivers.
The subjects for this study were 112 family caregivers who supported the patients composed of the out-patient treatment (n= 48) and in-patient (n= 68) at two university hospitals and one general hospital in Chonbuk.
The data were collected during the period from March 25, 1994 to April 27, 1994.
The instrument for this study were the Social Support Scale developed, by Park, Jee Won (1985) and Family Burden Scale modified from Onogomery¢¥s Family Burden Scale by the author.
The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correla&ui Coefficient using the SPSS program.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. The mean perceived social support score was 92.45 of a possible maximum score of 125. The major source of social support was the brother & sister¢¥s support. The major type of support was emotional support, appraisal support, material support, and informational support in order.
2. The mean score of family burden was 61.50 of a possible maximum score of 110.
3. There was a trend that showed a higher score for out-patient family on social support and a higher score for in-patient family on family burden.
4. There was a significant group difference between social support and educational background (F= 2.259, p <.05), and family income (F= 4.084, p < .05).
5. There was significant group difference between family burden and patient income (F= 2.844, p < .05), patient¢¥s relationship (F= 5.637, p < .001), experience of admission (t= 2.07, p <.05), and diagnosis (F= 2.462, p <.05).
6. There was a significant inverse relationship between social support and number of admission (r= -.2211, p < .05). In the meanwhile there was a significant linear relation-
ship between family burden and number of admission (r= .2356, p <.05).
7. The relationship between perceived social support and family burden was negatively correlated (r= -2595, p <.05).
